A SOCIAL PERSPECTIVE EBEANO SUPERMARKET CASE

Regulatory agencies must sit up to do better and ensure that necessary risk-mitigating facilities and equipment were in place in public buildings. Supermarkets have grab-and-go food options, many of which are hot items. Though these treats are nice for customers in a hurry, the heating elements pose a significant fire hazard. Also, there are fluorescent lights, industrial coolers, and massive electrical systems found in every grocery store across the country.

Heat Exhaustion

The dry season is upon us and with the dry season, there is heat. The heat brings some special safety considerations: sunburn, heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration. No matter where you live if it gets hot enough and/or humid enough, you could be affected. Also, everyone has a different tolerance level and some people are much more sensitive to heat and sun than others.

RISING INSECURITY A SAFETY CONCERN

For over a decade, Nigeria has been fraught with insecurity challenges. Gradually, Nigeria is notoriously known for the poor level of safety and security threats within its border.  This problem has gradually metastasised to most nooks and crannies of the nation as there is palpable fear in the land. It is a fact now that the issue of insecurity has invincible social and economic dimensions.  No day passes by without reports of wanton killings and attacks.  This menace seems to defy prolonged efforts aimed at addressing it. Recent security breaches underscore the dire need for concerted and deliberate efforts coupled with a resolved commitment to fight our security woes.  Truthfully, insecurity is a global issue; it is not a Nigerian thing. However, what is important here is that this challenge is identified and tackled timely.

Using intelligent automation to assist workers, for many companies, reimagining how workers work and adding intelligent technologies to help them is becoming a key focus. Consider a work environment that is highly automated, self-learning, efficient, and streamlined. Workers in an intelligent digital workplace are given technology skills that allow them to communicate, create, and execute high-value jobs while also allowing them to innovate.

THE VALUE OF TECHNICAL AND PROCESS SAFETY IN THE MANUFACTURING SECTOR

Manufacturing industries are sustainable businesses only when their operations are reliable, safe and profitable. Products must also conform to high quality standards and meet the customer’s requirements. Process safety management (PSM) helps manufacturers establish adequate process barriers to effectively manage the product quality, build efficiency and control safety risks.

COMPLIANCE TO COLOR CODES FOR FIRE SAFETY

The underlying color rules for markings, identification and operational warning in fire safety are very important to users, operators, auditors, and system maintenance engineers or technicians. This does not only help in systems documentation, but also tracing and working on the correct piping routes during maintenance, upgrade, and ease in systems process automation and control. NFPA 704 – Standard System for the Identification of the Hazards of Materials for Emergency Response, ANSI/ASME A13.1 – Pipe Color Code Standards, ISO 14726 – Color Coding Piping Systems, and ISO 22324 – Societal Security – Emergency Management – Guidelines for Color-Coded Alerts are the benchmarking standards for compliance on color codes. ISO 20471:2016 Amendment – High Visibility Clothing makes provisions for safety wear with regards to requirements for high visibility clothing. ‘NFPA 1950 – Standard on Protective Clothing, Ensembles, and Equipment for Technical Rescue Incidents, Emergency Medical Operations, and Wildland Firefighting, and Urban Interface Firefighting’ gives guidelines on the aspect of protective clothing, including hard hats or safety helmets. American National Standards Institute / International Safety Equipment Association ANSI /ISEA 107-2020 – Standard for High-Visibility Safety Apparel, and The Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) covers aspects of color for safety wears. OSHA has color standards for caution and barricade tapes too. Guidelines for helmets are given in ISO 2925 – Specification for Industrial Safety Helmets, and Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).
